On Thursday, March 3, I made a rash decision to travel to Seattle to see if I could get five minutes on a stage to tell a story at The Moth. That the decision was rash doesn’t mean it was bad. I’m glad I did it, but the night offered me some lessons about motives and expectations.
It also served up a small regret, too, about a missed opportunity.
That I went at all can positively be attributed to a post I wrote here late last year, where I admired my old self for doing something that scared me and committed to getting it wrong a lot in 2022. Before lunch on that Thursday I learned that the event was sold out and that I hadn’t yet organized the story I had in mind. Once I wrote out a draft of the story and cleared the calendar with Diana, I made the decision to go anyway.
